What is top-up or extension of coverage?1
Top-up or Extension coverage provides additional days of travel medical insurance for a specific trip for travellers who are away for a longer period of time than what they're covered for with their existing plan.
Or, in case of a trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance, travellers can add additional coverage amount if the trip cost is higher than what their existing plan covers.

When can top-up or extension of coverage be Useful?
How does top-up or extension of coverage work?
Here is an example of how top-up or extension of coverage works:
- Mark is going on a trip outside his province for 30 days and wants to make sure he has coverage for the entire duration of his trip. His existing plan has emergency travel medical coverage of up to $2 million, for the first 21 days.
- Mark tops up his existing coverage by purchasing top-up or extension from TD Insurance to provide coverage for the last 9 days.
- Mark now has coverage for his entire trip, with up to $2 million of emergency travel medical coverage for the first 21 days of his trip, through his existing plan, and up to $5 million in coverage for the remaining 9 days through the Top-up or Extension coverage from TD Insurance.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for top-up or extension for travel medical insurance or trip cancellation & interruption insurance you must meet the following requirements.

You are a Canadian resident.

You cannot currently have an active claim or expecting to incur a claim for the existing trip.

The minimum age for coverage for anyone on your policy, is 15 days old. There is no maximum age limit to apply for coverage.

There are medical conditions that could make you ineligible for coverage.2

You are covered by the government health insurance plan of your province or territory of residence for the entire duration of your trip and at the time a claim is incurred.

Depending on the coverage you're applying for, you must also meet the following requirements.

If your existing plan is from TD Insurance, you can apply either before or after you depart on your trip.

If your existing plan is from another insurer, you must apply for a top-up or extension with TD Insurance before your departure date.

No insured person must have suffered a medical emergency during your trip before you apply for this top-up or extension of coverage.

Applicants 60 years of age and older will be required to fill out a medical questionnaire.

You must apply before your existing plan expires.3

Exclusions and limitations
It’s important to know that benefits will only be paid for eligible expenses and only up to the maximum amount. A complete list of exclusions that apply to your top-up or extension of coverage will appear in your policy, but here are some examples.

Unstable pre-existing medical conditions.5

Abuse of alcohol, drugs, or intoxicants.

Travel to destinations under a travel advisory by the Canadian government.

The birth of a child born during a covered trip.

Travelling against the advice of a physician.

Expenses not pre-approved by our administrator may be limited or excluded.

Committing or attempting to commit an illegal or criminal act.

Self-inflicted injuries.

Noncompliance with any medically prescribed medical therapy or treatment.

Your top-up or extension coverage will start at midnight on the effective date indicated on your confirmation of insurance letter, which you will receive after you purchase a Top-up.
Top-up or extension insurance is a separate plan. Therefore, it has its own certificate/policy with its own terms and conditions.
Your top-up coverage from TD Insurance may offer different benefits, with different terms and conditions than your existing plan.
Having a pre-existing condition doesn’t disqualify you from getting a top-up or extension, but your pre-existing condition will have to be considered "stable" for a specified period of time before your effective date, to be covered.5

If you have a multi-trip travel insurance plan, you can top-up one particular trip at a time.
If you are planning multiple trips that are longer than the coverage period of your existing plan, consider a multi-trip travel insurance plan that provides longer coverage periods.

TD Insurance Trip Cancellation & Interruption Plan is underwritten by TD Life Insurance Company (medical covered causes) and TD Home and Auto Insurance Company (non-medical covered causes).
